RYA Day Skipper Practical

This is a great 5 Day course is for new skippers who intend to undertake short passages in familiar waters by day. Building on the theory subjects covered on the Day Skipper Theory course, subjects taught include;

  • Boat preparation
  • Boat handling under Sail
  • Sail Trim/Points of Sail
  • Engine operation and maintenance
  • Safety and seamanship
  • Rules of the road
  • Securing to a buoy
  • Berthing alongside
  • Man overboard recovery
  • Pilotage
  • Passage Planning
  • An Introduction to night navigation.

  • 29th July – 3rd August – 1 Space
  • 12th – 16th August – 3 spaces
  • 26th – 30th August
  • 9th – 13th September – 1 spaces

All sail courses will only run with a minimum of 3 students on each course, due to the nature of running a yacht.

Minimum age is 16

Commercial use: when commercially endorsed, this qualifies the holder to skipper a commercial vessel up to 24m in length in Category 6 (3 miles NDP daylight) or 5 (20 miles NDP daylight) waters. Cat 5 when combined with day skipper theory certificate)


  • 5 days use of Sequel, our Beneteau 393
  • Diesel and berthing fees
  • Maximum 5 students
  • Accommodation
  • Breakfast, lunch and some evening meals onboard
  • All bedding (inc. duvet)
  • Use of a lifejacket for the course
  • Use of wet weather gear during the course.

What to bring:

  • Cash for some evening meals
  • All the usual skippering equipment (pencils, erasers, notepads etc)
  • Soft soled shoes
  • Light wellies or waterproof shoes
  • Clothes for the duration of the course
  • Any medication
  • Passport photo
  • Phone charger
