SQA Level 5 – Maritime Skills


We are pleased to be working in partnership with Argyll College to deliver this 20 week RYA/SQA Course. By combining SQA and RYA / MCA certification in this Maritime Skills course, students will receive a very comprehensive introduction to the maritime industries, plus additional internationally recognised certificates. This Course has been specifically designed to provide candidates with opportunities to develop  the general and practical skills, knowledge and understanding and employability skills needed to work in the sector. Theoretical shore based studies and practical activities afloat and  will give students an insight into workings of the maritime industries – which includes commercial sea fishing, the Royal Navy, the Merchant Navy, Maritime Search and Rescue, marine leisure / sailing, commercial sea fishing, aquaculture, ports and harbour industries.

The course has the following five SQA Maritime Skills Units:-

  • F8L0 11 Seamanship: An Introduction
  • F8KV 11 Maritime Environment: An Introduction
  • F8KR 11 Small Boat Engineering
  • F8KT 11 Health and Safety in the Maritime Sector
  • F8KP 11 Employability Skills and Careers in the Maritime Sector,

In addition, the course will have some of the following certificates:-

  • RYA Powerboat Level 1 and 2
  • RYA Essential Navigation Shore based Theory
  • RYA Day Skipper Shore based Theory
  • RYA Coastal Skipper Shore based Theory
  • RYA VHF Radio
  • RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance
  • RYA Radar
  • RYA Professional Practice and Responsibilities (PPR)

Pre-Requisites:

While no previous experience or qualifications are necessary access to the award is at the discretion of the College. Students would be expected to have a keen interest in the maritime industry and will be required to attend an interview.
